The right way to arrange wall hangings.
Let’s talk about hanging artwork and photos. Here are a few tips to get it right every time!
# 1 Rule and THE most important! Do not hang your pieces too high. This is such a common mistake, and I have always wondered what drives people to hang their artwork as high up on the wall as possible. Think of your wall hangings like a museum or art gallery. You want to walk through your home and leisurely look at everything at eye level, which means the center of your piece should land at approximately 57” off the floor. No reason to hurt your neck looking up! Hanging pictures up high does not make your ceilings look taller either (In case that’s a reason people do it) I’ll write another post on how to achieve that!
Think about the entire wall space as your canvas and scale things appropriately. If you have one tiny picture hanging on a large blank wall, it just gets lost. If you have a giant piece taking up the entire wall, it gets overwhelming. Try to balance the amount of wall space and art space by following a two thirds rule. 2/3 art, 1/3 wall or 1/3 art, 2/3 wall. The same rule applies whether we are talking about 1 piece of art or an arrangement of numerous pieces.
When hanging a piece above furniture, think about the size of the art in comparison to the furniture piece. You want it to feel balanced.
Have fun with gallery walls! Remember the two thirds rule and use the same spacing between pieces to create a more balanced look. Group like pieces together. Think of your arrangement of pictures as if it was one large piece of art. How will that fit on the wall? More on gallery walls later!
When in doubt, map it out! Use some blue tape to arrange your art on your wall before you start nailing.
