Bright, Modern and Open - Eden Prairie MN Kitchen Remodel

This was a really fun project to work on with Iron River Construction in Eden Prairie. There were quite a few challenges here. First being the layout- the tiny galley kitchen was situated between the living room and dining space. Second- the laundry room was tucked away in an awkward corner by the dining room and was not functional at all. Third- this home is heated and cooled in a unique way using concrete brick. On the exterior wall where the stove is now located, there is a concrete half wall that is in front of full-length windows. The reason for that is so that the sun can warm the bricks with the winter sun and help keep the home cool in the summer. This wall wasn’t going anywhere, so we had to find a way to work with it.

We came up with a design that honors the architecture of the home, while providing a space that was more functional for the homeowners. The first thing we determined was that the walls separating these spaces had to go! There was no structural reason they needed to be there. By opening up the entire space, it helped us to realize the potential. The homeowners wanted this to be a space they could gather without the separation. They dreamed of a bright open space with a large island, lots of storage, and ample countertop space. We achieved that by utilizing the available wall space for cabinetry and maximized the size of the island. We created a focal point out of the concrete wall by adding the range and a stunning stainless-steel hood. Another showpiece in this space is the waterfall countertop on the island.

One challenge in this space was the location of the laundry room, the access to it, and the function of the room itself. We came up with a clever solution to hide the entrance into the wall of cabinetry. We improved the function of the laundry room by relocating the washer and dryer to another wall in order to add cabinet storage and countertops.

The final touch in this remodel was redoing the fireplace and built-ins to match the new kitchen area. The results are absolutely gorgeous!
