Chaska Kitchen Remodel

Creating a timeless and updated kitchen while working with outdated oak.

This home was full of red oak and these homeowners were ready for an update. We wanted to work with the existing oak trim, doors, and stair railings since they are present throughout this 3-story home. The main goal for these homeowners was to give this kitchen an updated, timeless look while making sure it fit in with the rest of the home.

We made a few subtle changes to the layout of this kitchen to achieve a brighter, more functional space. We traded the big and visually bulky corner pantry closet for cabinetry that is much more functional in keeping all of their pantry items stored and organized. Removing the pantry closet also gave us the space we needed to create a larger island with space for seating on the back. We visually heightened this space by taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, while also adding extra storage.

To keep a timeless appeal to this space, we used a classic shaker style cabinet in a warm creamy tone and paired it with a stunning glass backsplash and quartzite countertops. We kept the color palette in the kitchen light, yet warm to pair beautifully with the woodwork throughout the home. We toned down the orange-oak flooring to a more neutral color that still works with the rest of the existing oak trim.

To pack function into this space, we added organizational accessories throughout the cabinetry, and now everything has its place. Dishes are easily accessible in deep drawers with peg dividers. Utensils are easily found in a divided drawer where everything has a spot. All of the cooking necessities are stored and organized around the cooktop. Cookware, cutlery, knives and spices are right where you need them for ease of use while cooking. All of the cooking necessities are stored and organized around the cooktop. We made use of a tight corner space in the lower cabinet with pull out shelving. In the pantry cabinets around the fridge, you’ll find tray dividers and roll out trays of varying depths to keep all of the pantry items organized and accessible.

To add a special element into this kitchen, we designed a custom built-in hutch that will serve a multitude of functions for this family while they are entertaining or for additional storage.

To finish off this remodel, we had to address the adjacent family room. we updated that space by replacing the carpet with wood flooring that runs through the kitchen, eating area, and family room to make them feel like connected, cohesive spaces. We also gave the fireplace a fresh look with a light natural stone, and complimented the kitchen cabinetry with matching built-ins around the fireplace.

The end result is a beautifully updated, yet timeless home that this family will enjoy for years to come.
